Ghosted After a Job Interview? Here's What to Do Next

You had a good interview. They said they'd follow up "soon." That was three weeks ago. It's one of the most common — and most frustrating — experiences in a job search, and it's worth saying plainly: it's usually not about you.

Hiring gets deprioritized constantly, for reasons that have nothing to do with how the interview went — a budget freeze, a reorg, the hiring manager going on leave, the role getting put on hold, or simply that saying nothing is easier than sending a rejection. None of that shows up on your end. All you see is silence, which makes it easy to assume the worst.
Give it two weeks before reading into it
Post-interview decisions often take longer than companies imply, even when things are going well. As a rough guide:
- Under 10 days: normal. Don't read into it yet.
- 10–14 days past their stated timeline: reasonable to send one follow-up.
- Three weeks+ with no response to that follow-up: treat it as a no, even without confirmation, and stop waiting on it.
Send one follow-up, not five
Send one polite, direct follow-up — not five increasingly anxious ones. Ask plainly whether the role's status has changed, and give them an easy way to say no without needing to explain themselves:
Hi [Name], following up on the [Job Title] interview from [date]. Totally understand if timelines have shifted — just wanted to check if there's an update, or if the role's status has changed.
If that gets no response within another week or two, you have your answer. There's rarely a version of continued silence that ends in an offer.
Don't let it stall your search
The costliest part of being ghosted isn't the silence itself — it's the applications you didn't send while waiting to hear back on this one. Keep applying elsewhere in parallel. Set yourself an internal deadline for when a quiet application stops counting as "in progress" and becomes something you've mentally closed the door on, so it's not taking up space in your head.
